The kitchen is the heart of the home; not simply a place where you cook and eat, but a room where you come together, socialise, work and so much more. When you’re faced with a small or awkwardly shaped kitchen however, creating the perfect space can seem like a daunting task. If you haven’t got a ‘perfectly’ shaped kitchen, don’t worry, ingenuity and strategic planning can conquer even the most challenging kitchen. We work with our clients to transform their kitchens, and we want to give you some top tips when it comes to thinking about yours.
Embrace Unconventional Layouts:
Awkward spaces in kitchens often arise from unconventional layouts, such as tight corners, alcoves, or uneven walls. It can be easy to let these things negatively impact a kitchen design, however they also offer opportunities for creative design solutions. Custom cabinetry and worktops can be tailored to fit seamlessly maximising storage and functionality. Work with, and not against, asymmetrical elements by incorporating staggered shelving or varying heights.
Customise Storage Solutions:
When space is limited, smart storage is key. In awkward spaces, such as narrow corners or sloped ceilings, standard storage solutions may not fit the bill, but there is plenty of scope with custom-built cabinets or shelving units. These are designed and tailored to fit perfectly into these spaces, maximising storage capacity. Pull-out drawers or baskets can be installed in tight corners to make use of otherwise wasted space, providing easy access to pots, pans, and food storage.
Transform Nooks and Niches:
Awkward alcoves or recessed areas often go unused in traditional kitchen designs, but again, with a bit of creativity, these spaces can be fully utilised. Consider transforming an unused alcove into a cosy breakfast nook with built-in seating and storage underneath. Install floating shelves or hanging racks in recessed areas to showcase decorative items or store frequently used cookware. These spaces no longer need to be overlooked and can become useful spaces in your kitchen.
Maximise Vertical Storage:
Where floor space is limited or a tricky shape, vertical storage becomes a game-changer. You can take advantage of wall space by installing tall cabinets or shelving units that extend right up to the ceiling. Adjustable shelving allows for customisation to accommodate items of varying heights, while hooks or racks mounted on the walls provide additional storage for utensils, pots, and pans. Valuable worktop space can be freed up by using vertical space effectively, and avoid clutter creeping in.
When you open your mind to possibilities, you can be creative and innovative to create a practical and appealing room. You can work with the design, and embrace the uniqueness of your kitchen.
