Ah, the British summer—when the sun graces us with its presence and we can’t wait to embrace outdoor living. At GKHQ we love a summer party and definitely make the most of our kitchen space which flows into the garden where we have a cooking station, and a covered and heated seating area. With the BBQ fired up and the beers on ice, we’re ready! We want to share our love of socialising with you and give you some ideas and tips on how you can create a seamless indoor-outdoor party space.
Incorporate Indoor-Outdoor Flow
This is key to creating a space that feels connected to the outdoors. Consider installing large bi-fold or sliding doors that open up your kitchen to the garden or patio. This not only invites natural light but also allows guests to move freely between indoor cooking areas and outdoor entertaining spaces. Even if you have an outdoor cooking area, good flow and access makes life much easier.
Choose Durable and Weather-Resistant Materials
As we know, the British weather can be unpredictable, so opt for durable materials that can withstand whatever weather is thrown at us. You might immediately think about the cold and wet, but with some particularly hot periods over the last couple of years, include heat in your consideration too. Choose weather-resistant flooring such as stone or outdoor-grade tiles and for worktops and furniture, look for materials like stainless steel, teak, or weatherproof rattan. You can increase furniture lifespan by storing it away, especially in the winter, or by using a purpose-made cover.
Practical Layouts for Summer Parties
For summer gatherings, consider creating dedicated outdoor cooking stations. If you have a gas or fixed BBQ consider this before it’s installed. For moveable or disposable BBQs, there is more flexibility and option for change. Either way, build in space around the BBQ for cooking prep and utensils, and dishes for cooked food. We think that space for an ice bucket is also a great idea for the chef’s beers 😉
Alfresco Dining
You might not want to cook outside, but you can still enjoy some summer alfresco dining. Set up outdoor tables and chairs under a gazebo or parasol to create a comfortable dining area shaded from the sun. Heaters and shelter will keep you warm and dry when the sun isn’t out.
Embrace British Traditions
Take inspiration from British summer events, like Wimbledon, and host themed summer parties. Garden tea parties, street parties, jugs of Pimms, strawberries and cream… all quintessentially British and guaranteed to get you in the party mood. Creative lighting solutions such as fairy lights, lanterns, or solar-powered pathway lights are perfect for those long summer evenings.
Transforming your kitchen into the ultimate indoor-outdoor party space is a fantastic way to make the most of the British summer, and even spring and autumn. By combining practical design elements you can elevate your entertainment and enjoy the best of summer living right at home.
